While Qigong is often narrowly thought of as only exercises or meditations that can be used to improve one’s health or to cure sickness, the range and scope of this art is much wider.

Qi is energy, and that is found in the heavens, earth, and every living thing. Gong means time and energy.

the development and concepts of martial qigong

Martial Qigong is believed to have originated in the Shaolin temple during 502-557 CE. It was based on Damo’s Qigong Muscle/Tendon Changing Classic, also known as “Yijingjing.”

Practicing Damo’s Qigong helped Shaolin monks discover that they could not only improve their health, but also greatly enhance their martial techniques.

Following this revelation, many martial styles were developed over time based on Qigong theory, creating internal and external styles.

  • External styles focus on building Qi in the limbs and coordinating with physical martial techniques through a focused mind.
  • Internal styles generate Qi in the body and use soft techniques and limited muscle usage to increase power in the limbs.

Although the original focus of training was originally on enhancing fighting ability with health as a by-product of training, the health aspect of Martial Qigong has now become a greater priority.

Qigong is any study or training which requires a lot of energy and time to learn or accomplish.

qigong history & benefits

Qigong has four historical periods:

It’s First Period (prior to 1122 BCE) when the I-Ching, “Book of Changes was introduced.

The Second Period (206 BCE) is when Buddhist and meditation was imported from India and introduced into the art.

To it’s Third Period (which lasted until 1911) when it was discovered that Qigong could be used for martial purposes.

Finally, Qigong’s Fourth Period (after 1911) when a new era arose where the influence of different Qigong practices from India, Japan, and other countries were mixed in.

Taking us to Today, where Qigong is proven to benefit mental and physical health, including:

  • stress reduction, anxiety, depression, addiction, heart, lung, kidney disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, and immune system diseases.

muay History & benefits

Qigong

The history of Muay (translates to Boxing), the ancestral fighting style of the Thai people, remains uncertain. However, researchers believe that it was first structured based on Khmer fighting techniques between 200 BC – 1238. And during this time developed as a bare-handed military fighting technique complementary to the use of weapons.

During the Sukhothai Era (1238-1377), findings showed that the practice of Muay became a real duty for adolescents.

Centuries later, in the early 1930’s, Muay became a modern combat sport officially known as Muay Thai. Which has indubitably helped contribute to the creation and preservation of a national identity in Thailand.

Today, martial arts are widely practiced and competed in across the globe, with numerous physical and psychological benefits. From maintaining a health body, to benefiting people in good health. Also helping those who suffer from cognitive, developmental, and physical disabilities.
